Your gut health, your immune system, your nervous system and your lifestyle are constantly communicating with your skin. And when something inside is out of balance, your skin is often one of the first places where this becomes visible.

  • the gut microbiome

  • inflammation levels in the body

  • nutrient absorption

  • hormone metabolism

  • the nervous system

Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. Together they form your gut microbiome. This ecosystem plays a key role in digestion, immunity and inflammation regulation. When this system is balanced, your skin often reflects that stability. When it is disrupted, the skin can become reactive, inflamed or sensitive, which can contribute to acne, eczema, rosacea or psoriasis.

How gut health influences your skin: the main mechanisms explained

1. Inflammation: the root of many skin conditions

One of the most important links between the gut and the skin is inflammation. When the gut lining is irritated or the microbiome is imbalanced, the immune system becomes more reactive. This can lead to low-grade chronic inflammation in the body.

This type of inflammation is often not clearly noticeable at first, but it can show up in the skin as:

  • acne breakouts

  • redness and flushing

  • eczema flare-ups

Small particles such as undigested food components, toxins or bacterial fragments can then pass into the bloodstream. This triggers an immune response.

From a holistic perspective, this can contribute to:

In microbiome testing, this is often indirectly suggested through markers of inflammation, dysbiosis patterns or immune activation. Your gut lining is dynamic and can recover with the right support. When this balance is disrupted, histamine levels can become higher than the body can handle.

This may contribute to:

  • itching or eczema flare-ups

In practice, I often see combinations including:

  • reduced bacterial diversity

  • signs of dysbiosis

  • increased inflammatory markers

  • impaired short-chain fatty acid production

  • possible histamine imbalance

  • signs of slow gut motility or constipation patterns

These patterns do not cause acne directly, but they create a terrain in which the skin becomes more reactive.

From a gut-focused perspective, support often includes:

Eczema and the gut: how gut health influences the skin barrier

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is strongly linked to immune system reactivity and barrier dysfunction. Interestingly, both the skin barrier and gut barrier share similar functions: they protect the body from unwanted external substances while allowing nutrients and moisture through.

When the gut barrier is compromised or inflamed, the immune system becomes more reactive. This can increase skin sensitivity and dryness.

In clients with eczema, I often see:

  • increased histamine sensitivity

  • dysbiosis with reduced beneficial bacteria

  • increased intestinal permeability (often referred to as ‘leaky gut’)

  • specific food reactivity patterns

  • gut motility issues (both slow digestion or irregular stools)

This does not mean food is the “cause”, but it can be part of a larger system imbalance.

Rosacea is often characterised by redness, flushing, visible blood vessels and sometimes inflammatory bumps on the face. While it is primarily seen as a skin condition, the underlying drivers are often systemic.

One of the most important links is the connection between the gut microbiome, histamine regulation and vascular reactivity.

In rosacea, I often see that the skin reacts strongly to internal and external triggers. These triggers are not only topical or environmental, but also digestive and microbial.

Gut-related patterns often seen in rosacea

Several gut-related mechanisms are frequently involved:

  • histamine intolerance or histamine overload

  • small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO or IMO patterns)

  • dysbiosis with reduced microbial diversity

  • impaired gut motility (often slower transit)

  • increased intestinal permeability

  • altered immune activation

Especially histamine plays a key role here. Certain gut bacteria can increase histamine production, while others are responsible for breaking it down. When this balance is disrupted, flushing and redness can become more frequent.

This is also why many people with rosacea notice that symptoms worsen after certain foods or during periods of stress, or with (intense) exercise.

  • identifying possible underlying bacterial overgrowth patterns (such as SIBO or IMO) through testing when symptoms are persistent or accompanied by bloating and digestive discomfort

Rosacea often improves when both the gut and nervous system are supported together, rather than in isolation.

Psoriasis and the gut: immune system imbalance from within

Psoriasis is an autoimmune-related inflammatory skin condition characterised by thickened, scaly plaques. It is strongly linked to immune system activity, and increasingly research highlights the role of the gut microbiome.

The gut is one of the most important regulators of immune balance. Around 70-80 percent of the immune system is located in and around the digestive tract. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, immune signalling can become more inflammatory.

Gut-related patterns often seen in psoriasis

In practice and in microbiome testing, psoriasis is often associated with:

  • reduced microbial diversity

  • increased intestinal permeability patterns

  • elevated inflammatory markers

  • reduced short-chain fatty acid production (important for gut and immune regulation)

  • dysbiosis with overgrowth of pro-inflammatory bacteria

  • possible metabolic endotoxemia patterns (low-grade immune activation from gut-derived compounds)

This creates a systemic inflammatory state that can express itself in the skin.

Psoriasis support is usually  longer term, multi-layered, and focused on regulating systemic inflammation rather than quick symptom control.

What I often see in microbiome tests with skin issues

In my practice, microbiome testing often helps to make patterns visible that are otherwise invisible.

While every person is different and each condition presents differently, there are recurring themes in clients with acne, eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis. These patterns often form the underlying internal environment in which skin symptoms develop.

1. Reduced microbial diversity

A lower diversity of gut bacteria is one of the most common findings. This often correlates with:

  • lower resilience of the gut ecosystem

  • increased sensitivity to dietary changes

  • higher inflammatory potential

2. Dysbiosis patterns

This can include:

  • overgrowth of opportunistic bacteria

  • reduced beneficial strains

  • imbalance in fermentation processes

Dysbiosis is not a diagnosis in itself, but a reflection of ecosystem imbalance.

3. Inflammatory patterns

Some stool analyses show markers that suggest:

  • increased gut immune activity

  • irritation of the gut lining

  • altered inflammatory response

One of the most overlooked factors in the gut-skin connection is the nervous system. Your gut and skin are both highly sensitive to stress signalling.

  • your daily rhythm and lifestyle

This perspective does not simplify skin conditions, but it does make them more understandable and workable.
